Impact of HIV/AIDS on Young People and Women
Globally, half of all new HIV infections are estimated to be among those under the age of 25. Most young people are infected with HIV through sex.
In the United States, among young people, it is young women and people of color who have been particularly affected by the epidemic. In 2003, teen girls represented half of HIV cases reported among 13-19 year olds. Young African Americans represented 66% of AIDS cases reported among this population and Latino teens represented 21%. Young MSM (men who have sex with men) are also disproportionately affected.
